In recognition of National Get Smart About Credit Day, which is October 18, the Center for Credit and Consumer Research (CCCR) at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, is hosting a financial literacy workshop for eighth-graders at Wilson Middle School. The workshop is scheduled for Thursday, October 16, from 1:15 pm to 2:30 pm, in the auditorium of Wilson Middle School, located at 718 East 28th Street. More than 175 students will participate. “The program is designed to provide information on the proper use of spending, saving and general credit card usage,” Erica Jackson, director for the CCCR, said. “The goal is to teach students the necessary skills to use credit wisely, and to ensure that they become financially responsible citizens in the future.” National Get Smart About Credit Day is an annual event aimed at teaching teens and young adults about credit. During this session, students will be given the knowledge and skills necessary for wise credit card usage. In addition to Penn State Behrend, the School District of the City of Erie, Junior Achievement of Erie County, and the Erie Federal Credit Union are participating in National Get Smart About Credit Day.
Army Reserve LTC Harlan T Ware recently assumed command of the 313th Transportation Battalion during a change of command ceremony at the Adam S Brandt Memorial Reserve Center in Curtis Bay, Md. Ware, a 1987 graduate of Edinboro University, is a veteran of Operations Desert Shield/Storm and also served two consecutive combat tours in support of Operation Iraq Freedom while conducting logistics operations in Kuwait, Afghanistan and Iraq from 2005-07. He has served in the Army Reserve for more than 21 years.
Gannon University will help local members of the Girl Scouts reach for the stars and earn their next badge. The University today, Saturday, Oct 11 will host a program for the Girl Scouts, with faculty and students leading a fun workshop on kites, airplanes, space-age technology, women astronauts, and other related topics. Through the program, the Girl Scouts, grades 4-5, can earn the Junior Aerospace Badge. The workshops are sponsored by Gannon University’s student chapter of the Society of Women Engineers and will run from 9 am to 12 pm in room 101 of the Zurn Science Center, 143 West 7th St. While aerospace will be the focus of the program, the participants also will learn about the other fields of engineering, said Karinna M. Vernaza, PhD, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Gannon. Topics to be covered include: What exactly do engineers do? Do you want to be an engineer? Women in aerospace and NASA. In addition to helping participants earn the badge, the program hopefully will spur in the girls an interest in engineering. The participants also will make paper airplanes and then have a friendly competition to see which fly the farthest. The program also will be offered for another group of Girl Scouts on Saturday, Oct 25.

John Tavares scored twice to lead the Oshawa Generals to a 6-2 win over the Erie Otters in an Ontario Hockey League played last night in front of 3,772 at General Motors Centre. Taylor Carnevale, Brett Parnham, Shea Kewin and Alexander Denezhkin also scored for the Generals while Andy Andreoff and Kory Nagy collected two assists each. Oshawa improved to 5-4 with the win. Sean Jones and Luke Gazdic replied for the Otters. Erie sank to 2-5-1-0 with the loss. Erie completes a three-game road trip tonight in Barrie against the Colts in a 7:30 pm contest.

Gannon University's ROTC will honor five servicemen who made the ultimate sacrifice. As part of the University's annual Alumni Homecoming and Reunion Weekend, taking place Friday through Sunday, Gannon's ROTC will hold a plaque dedication for alumni of the program who lost their lives in the line of duty. The ceremony will begin at 4:45 pm Saturday, Oct 11 in AJ's Way, located between West 7th and 8th streets just west of Peach Street. Following the dedication, a reception will be held at 5:15 pm in the Erie Technology Incubator, located adjacent to AJ's Way. The dedication will honor five Gannon University ROTC alumni who lost their lives in the line of duty: 1st LT John N Dale, a member of Gannon's class of 1950; 2nd LT Thomas R Grant '64; CPT Patrick J Brophy '64; CPT David G Mitchell '62; 1st LT Kenneth J Susmarski '68; and 1st LT Edwin T Winter '68. On Sunday, October 12 at 7:30 pm, Nehst Studios, the Eerie Horror Film Festival and the Film Society of NW PA., will screen the documentary "41" at the Warner Theater in Erie, Pennsylvania. Although the film is premiering in Erie at the close of the 5th Annual Eerie Horror Film Festival, it's important to note that the documentary is not a horror movie. However, the paranormal theme of the film and the questions it raises should appeal to many of the festival's filmgoers. "41" is a unique documentary about Nicky O'Neill, one of the 100 people who died in the winter of 2003 when a catastrophic fire broke out in a Rhode Island concert club. Educators from Erie County will embark on a safari at the Erie Art Museum, 411 State Street on Thursday, October 16 from 4-7 pm. Educators from all disciplines and age levels can earn Act 48 credit. National Chemistry Week, an annual public outreach and education effort of the American Chemical Society (ACS), takes place October 19-25. Tracy Halmi, lecturer in chemistry at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, is the national chairwoman for the ACS subcommittee responsible for developing programming for National Chemistry Weeks 2006 through 2009. Halmi, her committee, and the Washington, DC based ACS create experiments, demonstrations, and publicity materials for nationwide use. “This year’s theme explores the chemistry of sports - everything from how materials science improves equipment safety to advances in nutrition and hydration that optimize athletic performance,” Halmi said. “Each year we choose a unique theme to stress the importance of chemistry and how it impacts peoples’ lives.” The Erie Section of ACS has won four ChemLuminary Awards from the national organization for delivery of outstanding National Chemistry Week programming. Local Erie photographer John Huegel will be conducting a family portrait photography marathon on Sunday October 19 at Presque Isle State Park. 100 percent of the session fees will be donated to the Baker Family to help address medical bills. The portrait marathon will begin at 8 am and will continue until the park closes at sunset. Huegel's goal is to photograph two to three families per hour in various settings around the beach and waterworks area. The goal is to photograph 20 or more families before the park closes at sundown. In the summer of 2008, Scot Baker was severely injured in a motorcycle accident. Though recovering slowly, he is still in need of extensive rehabilitation, and the family's medical bills continue to increase. The Baker family are customers and friends of Photography business owner John Huegel. Friends of the Baker family will also volunteer their time in providing support and refreshments for the event. Applications are now available for the Department of Environmental Protection's 2009 environmental education grants, which support projects and programs that increase environmental awareness and understanding in Pennsylvania's communities. Schools, universities, intermediate units, non-profit groups and county conservation districts are eligible and encouraged to apply.
Grants will range from $3,000 to $20,000 and support programs that promote environmental education in Pennsylvania. The deadline to submit a pre-application form for the grants is December 12. Beginning January 16, DEP will notify approved pre-applicants to prepare a full application to submit to the department by March 6. To encourage more successful grant applications, a workshop will be held November 3 at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center at Presque Isle in Erie, PA. Pennsylvania Sea Grant will facilitate a two-day Best Management Practices workshop for landscapers, Realtors, environmental engineers, surveyors, municipal officials, and other professionals whose work touches our region’s environmentally fragile shorelines. The Best Management Practices for Professionals workshop is scheduled for Thursday, Nov 13 and Friday, Nov 14. Thursday will be a full day of presentations at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center in Erie; Friday will be used for site visits. Topics to be covered in the worship include coastal geology, hydrology, and the ecological impact of shoreline erosion; public access issues; the US Army Corps of Engineers’ permit process; similarities of and differences between the permitting processes in New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio; landscape solutions for erosion-prone areas; habitat impacts of riparian projects; and in-stream habitat and bank stabilization devices. The cost to attend the two-day workshop is $25. The workshop is approved for Penn State Continuing Education credit by the Pennsylvania Board of Realtors and the State Board of Landscape Architects for an additional fee of $35. The Great International Beer Festival will be held on Saturday, November 15 at the BrewErie at Union Station. Two 3 hour sessions will run from 12-3 pm and 4-7 pm with unlimited samplings. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 the day of the event. Tickets are limited to 250 per session.
Many communities and individuals in Northwest PA are frustrated by the lack of high speed Internet access. The Bona Fide Retail Request (BFRR) program is producing results in helping many communities obtain high-speed Internet access, but is it producing results fast enough? How sustainable are the results of the BFRR program?
