Yesterday was the monthly sentencing day at the Erie County Courthouse. Here's the major cases:
Wesley Urch Jr was sentenced to between 22 1/2 years and 45 years for the death of Stephen Caldwell and the injuries to Terri Peoples. Urch Jr and Caldwell had words outside an Erie club then Urch Jr go in his truck and ran them down.
Carlos Bryant was sentenced to between 18 years and 3 months to 39 years for stalking and raping a mentally disabled woman.
Crystal Clayton was sentenced to 9 to 20 years for causing the death of 3 month old Shadoni Steele. While babysitting and high on coke, Clayton dropped the baby out of a baby carrier (car seat) and the baby suffered fatal head injuries.
Lori Cochran was sentenced to between 1 year and 2 days to 5 years and 6 months for causing the death of Coleen DiFilippo. Cochran, driving drunk, slammed head on into DiFilippo's vehicle near 12th and Powell.

Erie County Council held a public hearing over proposed budget cuts that could include 44 jobs cuts, decreased funding to some programs and departments AND a tax increase. The county unions got nice size pay and benefit increases last year and were naive if they didn't see job cuts coming. Someone has to pay for it.

Erie City Council removed their heads from the rears for a moment and approved the authorization of an application for a state grant of $250,000 for streetscape design work in downtown Erie. The total cost of the design work is $350,000 with the Erie Redevelopment Authority and Erie Downtown Partnership each paying $50,000. It will cost the city zero. This was tabled once when the 7 morons on council could not grasp the concept of zero cost.

Here's the Erie County voter data. Erie County voter turnout was 68.16 percent with 126,151 of 185,070 registered voters going to the polls. Voting straight party were 26,615 Democrats, 16,206 Republicans, 761 Independents and 77 Libertarians. President - Barack Obama 73,641, John McCain 48,823, Bob Barr 375 and write-in 558. Attorney General - Tom Corbett 63,243 and John Morganelli 52,698. Auditor General - Jack Wagner 75,529, Chet Beiler 35,657 and Betsy Summers 4,869. State Treasurer - Robert McCord 69,179, Tom Ellis 43,678 and Berlie Etzel 3,100. Congress - Kathy Dahlkemper 69,383 and Phil English 53,114. State Senator, 21st District: Mary Jo White 10,799 and Mary Lea Lucas 2,210. State Senator, 49th District: Jane Earll 61,134 and Cindy Purvis 44,173. State House, 1st District: Pat Harkins 17,785. State House, 2nd District: Flo Fabrizio 21,531. State House, 3rd District: John Hornaman 17,460 and Jason Owen 13,075. State House, 4th District:Curt Sonney 17,011 and Rick Mitchell 8,441. State House, 5th District: John Evans 11,896 and John Alward 6,834.

On a semi-related note, Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean yesterday at the National Press Club that was shown on C-SPAN: "We (the DNC) can predict with 85 percent accuracy how you're going to vote based on your credit card data without bothering to see what party you're in."


Erie Indemnity Company (Nasdaq: ERIE) announced financial results for the third quarter 2008 and it wasn't pretty. Key points for the third quarter 2008: Net income per share-diluted decreased to $0.07 per share in the third quarter 2008, compared to $0.87 per share in the third quarter of 2007, driven by net realized losses on investments of $0.47 per share, after tax, resulting primarily from the turmoil in the securities markets experienced in September 2008. Net realized losses on investments resulted from impairment charges on investments of $0.42 per share, after-tax, and declines of $0.04 per share, after-tax, in the valuation of common stock measured at fair value. Net operating income per share (excluding net realized gains or losses on investments and related taxes) decreased to $0.54 per share in the third quarter of 2008, from $0.84 per share for the same period one year ago.


KD Industries (Kold Draft) was approved for a $200,000 loan from the Erie Enterprise Zone Revolving Loan Fund. Total financing for the expansion project is $912,000. Kold Draft manufactures ice machines, ice makers, ice crushers and ice dispensers. The company is a subsidiary of the Erie Management Group.

The Greater Erie Industrial Development Corporation (GEIDC) asked Erie City Council to approve a Keystone Opportunity Expansion Zone (KOEZ) that could convince Accuride to expand their Erie plant. Council approved it. Erie County Council, the Erie School Board and the state must also approve it. It would mean lower tax revenue in the short term but will pay off in the long run and could mean as many as 100 new jobs. Accuride manufacturers aluminum truck wheels.

I had to laugh when I looked at Wendy's Warehouse and looked at Wendy's profile - Location: Physical: NC; Emotional: Erie, PA. But she really does love Erie. She just brought some prints from Rob Bennett for her new office.

Rachel announced that she launched a new web site - Puremotif Photography and Design.

The urgency of confronting global warming and the importance of a worldwide energy policy are among the issues that students will discuss when Gannon University hosts its 56th annual Model United Nations. Some 500 high school students, representing more than 40 schools from the tri-state area, will participate in the Model UN, to be held Friday and Saturday, Nov 14-15. Gannon's Model United Nations is designed to help students more thoroughly understand the complex problems of international affairs in a rapidly-changing global community as well as the responsibilities and functions of the United Nations. The event also provides students a valuable opportunity to hone their skills in areas like critical thinking, leadership, public speaking, and team building. An additional benefit of the Model UN is helping participating students empathize with people of diverse countries, cultures, and viewpoints. Teams of students have been assigned country delegations and will represent the political views of that country during the two-day session at Gannon. Paul Foust will serve as general moderator for the event. Stephanie Fetzner, a senior political science major at Gannon, will serve as secretary general. Andrea Carnicella, a junior political science major, will serve as assistant secretary general.

Dawn Wiley-Mitchell was named 2008 Volunteer of the Year for the Ohio Buckeye Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Wiley-Mitchell has MS herself. She is a native of Edinboro, PA and attended Edinboro University of Pennsylvania where she received a bachelor of arts degree in psychology in 1984 and a master of arts degree in clinical psychology in 1986.

Incumbent Patricia Smith was re-elected to the Wood Village (Oregon) City Council. Smith attended Edinboro University of Pennsylvania.

Shawn Szydlowski scored all three goals to lead the Erie Otters to a 3-0 win over the Barrie Colts in an Ontario Hockey League game played in front of 3,136 at the Tullio Arena. Jaroslav Janus turned aside 31 shots in support of Szydlowski's hat trick for his second shutout of the season while Ryan O'Reilly collected three assists. Erie improved to 8-9-1-0 on the season. The Otters return to action with home games Friday and Saturday at the Tullio Arena. Friday the Otters welcome the Peterborough Petes in a 7 pm start. Jason Baird is scheduled to be in attendance to take part in a pre-game ceremony. The former Otters member was severely burned in a landscaping accident in July and will be back to thank the community for their support during his recovery. Saturday it the Otters and the No 1 ranked Windsor Spitfires in a 7 pm start at the Tullio Arena presented by TGI Friday's. The first 1,000 fans into the game receive a free appetizer card. Tickets.

Ahmad Salim netted the game-winning goal in the 78th minute to hand No 3 seed Penn State Behrend men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over No 2 seed Frostburg State in the AMCC Tournament semifinals, Wednesday at Bobcat Stadium.

The Penn State Behrend women's soccer team fell to Penn State Altoona 1-0 in double overtime in the AMCC Tournament semifinals.

Junior Brooke Gallentine (Mt Pleasant, PA/ Southmoreland) was named the AMCC and ECAC Southern Region volleyball player of the week. Gallentine closed the regular season with two big conference performances in wins over Pitt-Bradford and Penn St Altoona to clinch the AMCC regular season championship and a number one seed in the conference tournament.

The University of Notre Dame, ranked 16th in the Associated Press Division I preseason poll, forced 46 turnovers and posted a 96-30 victory over Gannon Wednesday evening in a women’s basketball exhibition game before 5,428 fans at ND’s Joyce Center. To tell you how good ND is, Gannon received four points in the USA Today ESPN Division II Top 25 preseason poll.

The NBA Development League Erie BayHawks announced signing long term broadcast agreements with Connoisseur Media’s WFNN-Fox Sportsradio 1330 AM, the Fan and Image Sports Network to air the team’s games. “We have tried to make it a cornerstone of our organization to formulate premier relationships and we are excited to add top notch organizations like Connoisseur Media and Image Sports Network as broadcast partners,” said BayHawks president Ron Sertz. “By adding these pieces of the puzzle to the NBA’s online Futurecast streaming, our fans will be able to keep track of the team both at home and on the road.” The games will be called by the BayHawks broadcast team of veteran Erie play-by-play man Chris “Red” Hughes and Brian Graves, the team’s director of ticket sales, whose background includes a variety of broadcast experience and stints with the Miami Heat, Detroit Pistons and Detroit Lions. The radio agreement calls for the BayHawks first game against the Fort Wayne Mad Ants on Friday, November 28, to air on WRKT (Rocket 101) with the remainder of the game broadcasts to air on the Fan. Image Sports Network will simulcast six live home games. The television schedule is: December 18, Dakota, 7 pm; January 9, Fort Wayne 7 pm; January 24, Iowa 7 pm; February 4, Idaho 7 pm; February 27, Rio Grande Vallley, 7 pm; and March 5, Tulsa (School Kids Jam), 11 am.

The Technology Council of Northwest Pennsylvania is hosting the TechQuest Exaflood presentation in Erie, PA at 4 pm today, Thursday, November 6. Speakers are Kelly Lewis, President and CEO of TechQuest Pennsylvania, and Philip Magistro, Director of Information Technology for the Governor’s Office of Health Care Reform. Exaflood is the exponential growth of the Internet. Just two years ago, the Internet used one (1) exabyte. Now, the Internet is using seven (7) exabytes per month, and usage is growing rapidly. TechQuest Broadband is focused on connecting every region in Pennsylvania with advanced broadband, and the technologies that run on advanced broadband applications. The Finance Speaker Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will host a discussion with Bruce A Gray ’80, senior vice president at Bank of America, on Friday, Nov 7. In his presentation, Gray will expand on features of the credit markets that have gone from being topics discussed primarily by financial professionals to daily newspaper headlines. Gray is an Oil City native and graduate of Penn State Behrend’s accounting program. His presentation will take place at 7 pm in the Samuel P “Pat” Black III Conference Center in the college’s Research and Economic Development Center (REDC). Parking will be available in the deck located off Jordan Road. Gray’s lecture is FREE, open to the public, and intended for a general audience.

The John Nesbit Rees and Sarah Henne Reese Charitable Foundation will pay your way into the ExpERIEnce Children’s Museum on Saturday, November 8. The Rees Charitable Foundation is underwriting a Free Admission Day at the museum as part of its support for National Chemistry Week. Penn State Behrend student chemists and faculty will be at the museum between 11 am and 2 pm that day to assist children with hands-on experiments and demonstrations related to this year’s theme, “Having a Ball with Chemistry.” National Chemistry Week is an annual public outreach and education effort of the American Chemical Society. In late 2007, the John Nesbit Rees and Sarah Henne Rees Charitable Foundation awarded the School of Science at Penn State Behrend a $21,250 grant to support the advancement of chemistry through educational programming. Tracy Halmi, a lecturer in chemistry at Penn State Behrend, chairs the committee responsible for developing programming for National Chemistry Weeks 2006 through 2009. Numerous events and activities await students and their families when Gannon University hosts its annual Fall Open House on Sunday, November 9. Registration will begin at 11 am in the Waldron Campus Center, 124 West 7th St. Students and their families also may attend optional masses at 11 am and at 4 pm in the Mary, Seat of Wisdom Chapel, 512 Peach St. Gannon University President Antoine M. Garibaldi, PhD, and others will offer welcoming remarks at 1 pm in the Hammermill Center, Peach Street and South Park Row. In addition, students can compete in Scholarship Contests in several academic disciplines: English Writing (room 210 of Beyer Hall); Spanish (Beyer 212); French and German (Beyer 213); Biology (Beyer 214-215); Education (Beyer 209); Chemistry (Zurn 101); and Engineering (Zurn 333A). All exams will begin at 10 am. Four year scholarships in each contest will be awarded to students who enroll at Gannon. The annual Chautauqua at Gannon Lecture will be held Monday, Nov 10 and will feature nationally known academician and political pundit Terry Madonna. The lecture will begin at 7:30 pm in the Yehl Room of Gannon's Waldron Campus Center, 124 West 7th St, and is FREE and open to the public. Madonna is the director of the Center for Politics and Public Affairs at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. Madonna in 2004 joined Franklin and Marshall, where he is also a professor of public affairs and director of the F and M College Poll. For more than 30 years, Madonna has taught and written about his two academic specialties: the American presidency, and American political parties and political behavior. The Erie Art Museum’s Contemporary Music Series presents Lou and Peter Berryman in concert at the Erie Art Museum Annex on Wednesday, November 12 at 8 pm. The performance will be held in the Erie Art Museum Annex, 423 State Street, admission is free; a $10 donation is suggested.

Pennsylvania Sea Grant will facilitate a two-day Best Management Practices workshop for landscapers, Realtors, environmental engineers, surveyors, municipal officials, and other professionals whose work touches our region’s environmentally fragile shorelines. The Best Management Practices for Professionals workshop is scheduled for Thursday, Nov 13 and Friday, Nov 14. Thursday will be a full day of presentations at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center in Erie; Friday will be used for site visits. Topics to be covered in the worship include coastal geology, hydrology, and the ecological impact of shoreline erosion; public access issues; the US Army Corps of Engineers’ permit process; similarities of and differences between the permitting processes in New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio; landscape solutions for erosion-prone areas; habitat impacts of riparian projects; and in-stream habitat and bank stabilization devices. The cost to attend the two-day workshop is $25. The workshop is approved for Penn State Continuing Education credit by the Pennsylvania Board of Realtors and the State Board of Landscape Architects for an additional fee of $35. In a relationship, who will be the first to be unfaithful? The question that playwright Pierre Marivaux explored in an 18th century garden plays out in a modern genetics laboratory in the upcoming Studio Theatre production of “The Dispute.” The updated setting also allows Chrystyna Dail, new director of the Studio Theatre at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, to add a second layer of inquiry to the dark comedy: When and how is it ethical to use human beings as scientific guinea pigs? “The Dispute” is appropriate for children over the age of 13. The 7 show run in the Studio Theatre at Penn State Behrend opens at 8 pm Thursday, Nov 13. Evening productions also will be held Friday and Saturday, Nov 14 and 15, and Tuesday through Thursday, Nov 18-20. A matinee performance will take place at 2 pm Sunday, Nov 16. The 7th Annual "Night With The Knights," a get-together for adults (30+ years of age) will be held Friday, November 14, from 7-9 pm at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the multi-purpose room at 1531 East Grandview Blvd in Erie. The event is sponsored by the Barber National Institute and the Knights of Columbus, and will include refreshments, horse races, and other activities. Gannon University's Erie Chamber Orchestra will hold its next concert at 7:30 pm Friday, Nov 14 at the Central Tech Auditorium, 3325 Cherry St. The concert will feature as soloist the Edinboro University Singers, with choral director Peter Van den Hornert. The Great International Beer Festival will be held on Saturday, November 15 at the BrewErie at Union Station. Two 3 hour sessions will run from 12-3 pm and 4-7 pm with unlimited samplings. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 the day of the event. Tickets are limited to 250 per session.

The Disco Spectacular Dance will be held 7-11 pm on November 15 at Rainbow Gardens in Erie. The dance features radio great Captain Dan. There will be two giant video screens, a dazzling light show, prizes for best retro outfit, a dance contest, a chinese auction and more. Gannon University's Schuster Gallery will host its next exhibit, "The Art and the Artist," from Nov 16, 2008 through Jan 16, 2009. The exhibit will feature the work of Vitus J Kaiser, a member of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Artist Association and a longtime art teacher in the Erie School District. An artist's reception will be held from 3-6 pm Sunday, Nov 16. It is free and open to the public. The exhibit will feature about 50 watercolors that depict mostly outdoor scenes. Schuster Gallery is located on the third floor of the University's Nash Library, 619 Sassafras St, and is open during regular library hours: Monday-Thursday, 8 am to midnight; Friday, 8 am to 9 pm; Saturday 10 am to 5:30 pm; and Sunday 12:30 pm to 12 am. Many communities and individuals in Northwest PA are frustrated by the lack of high speed Internet access. The Bona Fide Retail Request (BFRR) program is producing results in helping many communities obtain high-speed Internet access, but is it producing results fast enough? How sustainable are the results of the BFRR program? What could we be doing, individually and as a region, to become more effective in developing broadband infrastructure to serve our homes, businesses, and communities? Gannon University's Dahlkemper School of Business Administration will host an informational workshop for high school students who are considering majoring in business. The Business Day workshop will be held from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm Friday, Nov 21. It is open to high school juniors and seniors and their parents and is designed to help them answer questions such as: What type of career do I want to pursue? Is business administration the right "fit" for me? What will the job market be like after I graduate from college? What can I expect in terms of career opportunities? Depending on my interests, what salary range can I expect? Will the college or university I attend help me secure an internship? Throughout the day, students and their parents will be able to meet with graduates of Gannon's Dahlkemper School as well as current business majors and faculty members. Students also will be able to participate in an interactive workshop on the many and varied business programs Gannon offers, such as accounting, advertising communications, finance, international business, management, marketing, risk management/insurance, and sports management and marketing. In addition, families will be able to meet with representatives from the University's Office of Financial Aid and tour the campus. The Zone Dance Club Think Pink - Breast Cancer Weekend will be held November 21-22.
