Bishop Donald Trautman, Bishop of Erie, Fr Scott Jabo, Headmaster, Mayor Joe Sinnott, and officials from Erie Cathedral Prep participated in a ground breaking ceremony for the Cathedral Prep Events Center at 12th and Cherry Streets.
Cathedral Prep purchased the former Erie Malleable Iron Company property from the Gunite Corporation in April 2007 with the dream of building a multi-sport athletic facility for Cathedral Prep, Catholic Elementary Schools, and the community at large. Today, this dream is one step closer to becoming a reality. The Cathedral Prep Events Center will be built in three phases, with site work for Phase I beginning this year. Phase 1 will consist of a multi-purpose artificial turf field that will be used for football, soccer, and lacrosse, and an 8-lane, quarter mile competition track that will be the only one of its kind in the Erie area. Additionally, the first phase will include a 12,000 square foot building that will face 12th St. and house locker rooms, rest rooms, concessions, and the Rambler Retail Store. The cost of Phase 1 will be approximately $7.5 million dollars and is one component of The Campaign for Cathedral Prep: A Vision for Today…A Legacy for Tomorrow, which also includes $1 million in renovations to Prep’s Science Wing (completed in the summer of 2008) and a $1.5 million renovation for Cathedral Prep’s auditorium (scheduled for the summer of 2009). The sequential order and construction of Phase’s 2 and 3 has yet to be determined, but will include buildings that will consist of an 1,800 seat gymnasium for basketball and wrestling, a natatorium that will house a competition swimming pool with seating for 500 spectators, a strength and training room, physical therapy room, additional locker rooms, and athletic offices.
