Cape Airlines is in the final stages of negotiations with Erie International Airport officials to provide daily flights from Erie PA to Pittsburgh International Airport according to a story in the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Cape Air operates a fleet of over 50 Cessna 402's with up to 850 flights per day during high season. Last year Cape Air carried over 650,000 passengers, making them the largest independent regional airline in the United States.

Former WJET Meteorologist Brian Neudorff, now working in Rochester, NY - One of My Favorite Days in Weather History: "When it comes to weather this day is one of my favorites in history, and especially when I spent my time in Erie, PA, the daily record high in Erie is 71 and the record low is 18 and all of this happened in one day, November 12, 1911."

Greedy Erie teachers will vote today on a contract with the School District of the City of Erie. Their current contract expires at the end of this school year in June.

Jersey City Councilman Steve Lipski was arrested over the weekend for urinating on people from over a Washington DC nightclub balcony. This action differs slightly from councilpersons in Erie (city and county) that piss away taxpayer money.

For the week of November 3-9, Presque Isle Downs and Casino reported wagers of $37,411,858 with payouts of $34,128,529.

After 23 years at West Virginia University, Cheryl Torsney, associate provost for academic programs and professor of English, has accepted a position as Hiram ( Ohio ) College’s vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college, effective June 1, 2009. Torsney received her undergrad degree from Allegheny College where she majored in English and French.

A crew from WISH in Indianapolis made a stop in Erie after working the Steelers and Colts game. They interviewed the parents of Bob Sanders.

An 8-0 Dayton run in the first 2:32 of the second half proved to be the difference in Gannon’s upset bid of the NCAA Division I Flyers Tuesday night in a men’s basketball exhibition game at UD Arena. The Atlantic 10 program used the run early in the second half to post a 67-59 victory before 7,288 fans.

The Mercyhurst College women’s volleyball team earned its first victory in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference postseason play Tuesday evening, dispatching of Edinboro, 3-1, at the McComb Field House in Edinboro, Pa.

The Gannon University men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in a quad-meet at Cleveland State University Tuesday. The women beat John Carroll 171.5-49.5 and Notre Dame (Ohio) 157-72, while the men defeated JCU 164-67 and Notre Dame 190-26. The host Vikings beat the Lady Knights 149-91 and the men dropped a 136-88 decision.

The Gannon women’s soccer team recorded the second-highest single-season win total in school history during its first season in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). As a result, the Lady Knights dominated the PSAC Western Division post-season awards, claiming all three major honors. Head coach Colin Petersen was named PSAC Western Division Coach of the Year, while Courtney Rowan (Mentor, Ohio/ Notre Dame Cathedral Latin) was selected Athlete of the Year, and Amanda Sharbaugh (Sarver, Pa/ Knoch) was tabbed Freshman of the Year. Rowan and Sharbaugh were also named to the All-PSAC Western Division first team. Laura Piazza (Brampton, Ontario/ Cardinal Leger SS) joined the duo on the All-PSAC first team as a defender.

Five Mercyhurst women’s soccer players have been honored as All-PSAC West selections, with three also garnering Daktronics All-Atlantic Region honors. Sarah Powell, Christine Rehnert and Jamie Schroter earned first-team PSAC West awards, while Taylor Hilinski and Karla Vogt were named to the second team. In the Atlantic Region, Powell and Schroter earned first team distinctions and Hilinski was named honorable mention.

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference announced the 2008 All-PSAC Women’s Soccer Teams. A pair of Edinboro players were recognized, with Ashley Jones (Erie, PA/ Fairview) earning first team honors at defender and Elise Falatach (Bay Village, OH/ Bay) landing a spot on the first unit at midfielder.

The Erie Art Museum’s Contemporary Music Series presents Lou and Peter Berryman in concert at the Erie Art Museum Annex today Wednesday, November 12 at 8 pm. The performance will be held in the Erie Art Museum Annex, 423 State Street, admission is free; a $10 donation is suggested.

Penn State alumna Gretchen Franz will give a Smith Music Series recital on the 21 stop mechanical organ at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, on Thursday, November 13. The performance begins at 12:15 pm in the Larry and Kathryn Smith Chapel. It is FREE and open to the public; parking will be available in the nearby Junker Center lot.

Pennsylvania Sea Grant will facilitate a two-day Best Management Practices workshop for landscapers, Realtors, environmental engineers, surveyors, municipal officials, and other professionals whose work touches our region’s environmentally fragile shorelines. The Best Management Practices for Professionals workshop is scheduled for Thursday, Nov 13 and Friday, Nov 14. Thursday will be a full day of presentations at the Tom Ridge Environmental Center in Erie; Friday will be used for site visits. Topics to be covered in the worship include coastal geology, hydrology, and the ecological impact of shoreline erosion; public access issues; the US Army Corps of Engineers’ permit process; similarities of and differences between the permitting processes in New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio; landscape solutions for erosion-prone areas; habitat impacts of riparian projects; and in-stream habitat and bank stabilization devices. The cost to attend the two-day workshop is $25. The workshop is approved for Penn State Continuing Education credit by the Pennsylvania Board of Realtors and the State Board of Landscape Architects for an additional fee of $35. The question that playwright Pierre Marivaux explored in an 18th century garden plays out in a modern genetics laboratory in the upcoming Studio Theatre production of “The Dispute.” The updated setting also allows Chrystyna Dail, new director of the Studio Theatre at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, to add a second layer of inquiry to the dark comedy: When and how is it ethical to use human beings as scientific guinea pigs? “The Dispute” is appropriate for children over the age of 13. The 7 show run in the Studio Theatre at Penn State Behrend opens at 8 pm Thursday, Nov 13. Evening productions also will be held Friday and Saturday, Nov 14 and 15, and Tuesday through Thursday, Nov 18-20. A matinee performance will take place at 2 pm Sunday, Nov 16. The 7th Annual "Night With The Knights," a get-together for adults (30+ years of age) will be held Friday, November 14, from 7-9 pm at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the multi-purpose room at 1531 East Grandview Blvd in Erie. The Disco Spectacular Dance will be held 7-11 pm on November 15 at Rainbow Gardens in Erie. The dance features radio great Captain Dan. Gannon University's Schuster Gallery will host its next exhibit, "The Art and the Artist," from Nov 16, 2008 through Jan 16, 2009. The exhibit will feature the work of Vitus J Kaiser, a member of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Artist Association and a longtime art teacher in the Erie School District. An artist's reception will be held from 3-6 pm Sunday, Nov 16. It is free and open to the public. The exhibit will feature about 50 watercolors that depict mostly outdoor scenes. Gannon University's Dahlkemper School of Business Administration will host an informational workshop for high school students who are considering majoring in business. The Business Day workshop will be held from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm Friday, Nov 21. Is business administration the right "fit" for me? What will the job market be like after I graduate from college? What can I expect in terms of career opportunities? Nuncrackers - The Nunsense Christmas Musical comes to the Erie Playhouse this holiday season. Performances will be held December 4-7, 10-14, 18-21. The 26th edition of the McDonald's High School Basketball Classic will be held in Erie on Friday, January 16 and Saturday, January 17, 2009 at Gannon University's Hammermill Center. This year's event features nationally renowned programs from Pennsylvania, Texas and Washington, DC, complete with many top-ranked players. The field includes Archbishop Carroll from Washington, DC, Westbury Christian from Texas, defending Pennsylvania state champ Chester High School, and host Erie Cathedral Prep. The best possible way to acquire reserved tickets to the Classic, scaled at $12.50 per night, is to purchase an Erie Area Metro season ticket, while supplies last. That can be done in the Prep athletic office beginning on Monday, November 17. General admission tickets cost $7 per night in advance for adults and $5 in advance for students, and are on sale now. Any remaining reserved tickets will also be on sale beginning on Wednesday, December 3 at the Cathedral Prep athletic office. General Admission tickets will be available on the same date at the Erie Sport Stores, Dee's News, and select McDonald's Restaurants while they last. No phone orders will be accepted, and no tickets can be held. Another sell-out crowd is expected, so fans are encouraged to buy their tickets early.
