Representative John Dingell of Michigan, Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, is being challenged to his chairmanship from Representative Henry Waxman of California. The day after the election, Rep-elect Kathy Dahlkemper of Erie received call from Waxman himself and Rep Mike Doyle, a Pittsburgh Democrat who is supporting Dingell. Expect Dahlkemper to be named to the Energy and Commerce Committee.

Junior Meghan Agosta and the Mercyhurst Lakers women's hockey team are starting to warm up. Agosta recorded her fourth career three-goal game Saturday as the Lakers completed a two-game sweep of Syracuse with a convincing 7-1 win in Syracuse, NY.
The Mercyhurst College men’s basketball team opened up the 2008-09 campaign with a 80-69 victory over Saint Augustine’s in the first round of the Davis and Elkins Tip-Off Tournament Saturday evening in Elkins, WVa. With the victory, the Lakers improve to 1-0 for the 12th straight year. Four different Lakers scored in double figures. Senior Brian McTear and juniors Jordan Armstrong and Jeremiah Wise each added 15 points while junior Nnamdi Nnadili led all scorers with 20 points off the bench. In addition to his points, Armstrong also added seven rebounds. Mercyhurst returns to action on Sunday, Nov. 16 when the Lakers take on UNC-Pembroke in the championship game at 4 pm.
Kristina Freeman’s (Yonkers, NY/ Pelham Memorial) 20 point performance and 46 bench points led the Gannon women’s basketball team to an 83-69 victory over host Concord (WVa) Saturday afternoon during the opening day of the Lady Lion Classic. The squad’s next three scorers came off the bench. Kim Vargas (Sterling, Va/ Broad Run) led the bench players with 16 points. Julie Kleber (Suffern, NY/ Suffern) and Amanda Dacek (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/ Berea) added 13 and 10 points, respectively. At 1 pm today, Gannon plays Fairmont State University, the preseason top pick in the West Virginia Conference.
The Behrend Lions men's basketball team opened the season with a 77-55 win over Westminster. The senior play of Drew Seker (Ellicott City, MD/ Centennial) and Tom Newman (Girard/ Northwestern) led the blue and white to the finish line in the twenty-two point route. Seker had a stellar game working for 11 points, a team-high eight rebounds and five assists in thirty minutes of action. Newman was all over the court and chipped in nine points, six boards and passed out four assists.
The Gannon wrestling team competed in the Ashland Open Saturday, November 15. Chris Santucci (Bethel Park, Pa/ Bethel Park) finished second in the 133-pound weight class, as four Golden Knights placed. No team scores were kept.

The question that playwright Pierre Marivaux explored in an 18th century garden plays out in a modern genetics laboratory in the upcoming Studio Theatre production of “The Dispute.” The updated setting also allows Chrystyna Dail, new director of the Studio Theatre at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, to add a second layer of inquiry to the dark comedy: When and how is it ethical to use human beings as scientific guinea pigs? “The Dispute” is appropriate for children over the age of 13. The 7 show run in the Studio Theatre at Penn State Behrend. Evening productions also will be held Saturday, Nov 15, and Tuesday through Thursday, Nov 18-20. Gannon University's Schuster Gallery will host its next exhibit, "The Art and the Artist," from Nov 16, 2008 through Jan 16, 2009. The exhibit will feature the work of Vitus J Kaiser, a member of the Northwestern Pennsylvania Artist Association and a longtime art teacher in the Erie School District. An artist's reception will be held from 3-6 pm Sunday, Nov 16. It is free and open to the public. The exhibit will feature about 50 watercolors that depict mostly outdoor scenes.
