Erie PA Today News, Events and Info for today, Friday, November 21, 2008

Teri Rhodes gave birth to her baby Theresa Rhodes on August 12, 2007 in her Mercyhurst College apartment. Rhodes cut the umbilical cord with a pair of scissors, placed the new born baby in a plastic bag and took a shower. The coroner said the baby lived 10 minutes before dying, that baby Theresa Rhodes died from suffocation either by having a hand put over her face or just by being placed in a tied up garbage bag.
Rhodes should have been tried for first degree murder but in a travesty of justice was allowed to pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. Her sentencing will be held today. The max sentence is 10-20 years with a minimum in the standard range of 4 1/2 years and a minimum with mitigating circumstances of 2 years.

A water filter on the 5th floor of the Erie County Courthouse broke and caused the courthouse to close for the day. In a bit of Karma the leak happened where the $3.9 million remodeling was taking place. Even an act of nature is against the overly expensive project. Have no idea why there would be a need for a water filter. Maybe to remove any sense of fiscal responsibility from the water.

The Buffalo News reported the deal to sell the landmark Statler Towers to a group that included Scott Enterprises of Erie has fallen through. Scott Enterprises was to operate a hotel in part of the building. Maybe now they can put some effort into the property they own on the Erie bayfront - a 9 acre mud hole currently used by Hamot employees for parking. Five years ago this week in November 2003, Scott Enterprises announced plans for a hotel, two office buildings, condominiums, apartments, retail space, a marina and a park on the water's edge to be called Erie Harborside.

When a star explodes, "it wakes up the neighbors," says Dr Darren Williams, associate professor of physics and astronomy at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. "If a star in the Big Dipper detonated at a safe distance - say, 80 light years from Earth - the light show would be both spectacular and dangerous. A single exploding star radiates the energy of a hundred billion Suns, and is bright enough to be seen within galaxies located billions of light years from Earth." This infrequent but dazzling phenomenon will be the subject of the next Open House Night in Astronomy at the college. Williams will present "Cosmic Cataclysm: Why Do Stars Explode?" at 7:30 pm on Thursday, Dec 4, in 101 Otto Behrend Science Building. His non-technical lecture is FREE, open to the public, and suitable for children ages 8 and up. Astronomical viewing from the college's Mehalso Observatory will follow, weather permitting.
