Former Erie Police LT Robert Liebel entered a guilty plea to all charges against him including cocaine possession and theft. Liebel took the cocaine from the police evidence locker. He will be sentenced in May.
The driver of a van carrying 8 members of the Miami University (Ohio) Glee Club overturned on I-90 outside of Erie, PA when the driver fell asleep at the wheel. A bus and 5 vans of students were on their way to Buffalo for a concert. Sean Barry and Patrick Muccio are in serious condition while two others were admitted with less severe injuries.

VisitErie (formerly the Erie Area Convention and Visitors Bureau) released the latest Erie County hotel tax figures. In November 2008, they received $35,588 vs the November 2007 amount of $44,885, a decrease of about 21 percent. Still the tax has taken in about 8.8 percent more year over year. Of the 5 percent collected tax, VisitErie receives 1 percent and the Erie County Convention Center Authority receives the remaining 4 percent.

MetroAction, a non-profit, community development organization dedicated to providing small business loans and business development assistance throughout northeastern Pennsylvania (NEPA), has been approved for an IT implementation grant from the Center for eBusiness and Advanced IT (eBizITPA). The grant will provide funding assistance to develop a custom impact data management application. To date, eBizITPA's IT Kickstart program has assisted well over 300 companies across Pennsylvania with staggering results. The program has stimulated over $9 million dollars of private investment and companies have attributed over 100 new positions because of the results these implementation projects have had on their business. The Tulsa 66ers showed all the NBA scouts and other spectators at the 2009 D-League Showcase that they are a true collective unit. Tulsa limited the Erie BayHawks to just 34 percent shooting from the field and cruised to a wire-to-wire 94-85 triumph on Tuesday at the D-League's most premier event of the season. Erik Daniels, one of the D-League's best scorers, paced Erie with 20 points. The BayHawks were making their inaugural appearance at the Showcase. The Gannon men's basketball team (9-1) dropped three spots after its first loss of the season and is ranked 7th in the latest National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC)/Division II Top 25 poll released Tuesday afternoon. Mercyhurst (11-0) is ranked 21st and Edinboro was among teams also receiving votes.
The Gannon women's basketball team (10-1) is among others receiving votes in the latest USA Today ESPN Division II Top 25 released Tuesday afternoon. It marks the Lady Knights' first top-25 votes since the first poll was released on November 25. The squad was also among others receiving votes in the preseason poll.

The Edinboro University football coaching staff has suffered a big loss as offensive line coach Anthony Peluso has accepted a position at West Virginia Wesleyan. Peluso will serve as the offensive line coach and strength and conditioning coach for Dennis Creehan, who was recently hired as the Bobcats' head coach. Creehan served as Edinboro's head coach from 1979-84, finishing with a 39-20-1 record.
The Montreal Canadiens acquired 5-foot-11, 197-pound defenseman TJ Kemp from the Pittsburgh Penguins for a conditional seventh-round draft choice in 2010. Kemp was assigned to Hamilton. He graduated from Mercyhurst College in Erie, PA.

Local author Ken Springirth will present "Make Way for the Trolley," a presentation on the history of public transportation in Erie, on Wednesday, Jan 14, at 7:30 pm in Mercyhurst North East's Alex Theater, 16 West Division Street, North East.
