Erie PA Today News, Events and Info for today, Tuesday, January 13, 2009

The PA Department of Environment Protection and US Environmental Protection Agency began a thorough inspection of Erie Coke in Erie, PA as the agencies continue their investigations into chronic emission problems at the facility. An expert hired by EPA is accompanying the inspectors and will investigate the facility’s 58 coke ovens. DEP and EPA have been coordinating efforts to bring Erie Coke into compliance with its air permit, as well as federal and state regulations. In May 2008, both agencies inspected the facility and followed up with separate enforcement actions. DEP and EPA agree that the integrity of the coke ovens must be determined before any taking any final action. Each oven must be completely emptied of coke and coal so inspectors may view the interior walls. This process could take up to two weeks to complete. The inspections are not expected to impact production at Erie Coke. DEP ordered the company in June to immediately begin operating in compliance with the state’s Air Pollution Control Act and the facility’s air quality permit. The department also issued a civil penalty for $6.1 million, citing air quality violations and a lack of response to previous enforcement actions. Erie Coke appealed both of those actions. Since the enforcement actions were taken, the facility on numerous occasions has continued to operate outside of its permit requirements based on ongoing inspections by DEP.

Erie County government is run by stupid and lazy people. The budget for the Erie County Sheriffs Department was cut so there isn't enough people to work security at the 5th Street entrance. They didn't think about that. But that's the entrance the elected officials and employees use. Since they are too lazy to walk 100 feet to the main entrance they had to figure out a way to keep it open. The 5th Street doors will be covered during the morning and afternoon rush hours and a surveillance camera with a buzzer for the door used at other times.
